Nearly two weeks ago today a macro-burst hit Vanderburgh and Warrick counties causing significant damage, which prompted the formation of a group willing to help out. The group is called the Southwest Indiana Community Organizations Active in Disasters. Today's meeting was a training session for people willing to help those who may be affected by a natural disaster.

The Red Cross is helping form this group because the situations that this group will handle is something that the Red Cross is unable to assist with. The group will focus on long term recovery, such as how to get you back into your home should it become damaged. Steve Cain from Purdue University was at today's meeting and said in long-term recovery, the goal is if windows were blown, they want to help replace the windows. If roofs were torn off, then they want to make sure that they get the roofs covered in the response phase so no more rain water gets in there and in the long-term, replace the roof.

The group serves a four county area, which are Vanderburgh, Gipson, Posey, and Warrick counties. The group will collect applications from families who were impacted by a storm and then locate organizations who can donate resources for repairs. Once repairs begin, they will oversee your case until everything has been restored.

Should you be impacted by a natural disaster or have a group willing to help people out that are affected by a disaster, you can call the assistance line by dialing 2-1-1 from your telephone..
