A federal judge rules Kentucky must recognize same-sex marriages from other states.

U.S. District Judge John Heyburn said today denial of those marriages violates the equal protection guarantee of the U.S. constitution.

Similar challenges are before courts in Louisiana and Missouri, and the issue could reach the Supreme Court.

Gay marriages are now legal in 17 states and the District of Columbia.
