The Lady Wildcats survive regional play thanks to a big second half.
Mater Dei had its hands full in the Class 3A Regional Championship Game against Madison. The Lady Wildcats ended the first half in a 24-24 tie, then gave up a 7-0 run to start the second half. When Coach Steve Goans installed a rarely used 1-3-1 half court trap defense with 3:00 to play and his team down 31-24 in the third quarter, the tide turned.
"We'd been saving that for a team like this one," says Goans. "We prepared well and executed well."
Indiana Miss Basketball candidate Maura Muensterman and junior center Tori Schickel sparked a 25-2 run extending well into the fourth quarter. Mater Dei held on to win 54-45, their closest result since late December. The Lady Wildcats will play Indianapolis Chatard in the semi-state round Saturday at Bedford North Lawrence HS.
