Mayor Winnecke Reacts to Peoria's Offer for LST 325

Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke is still optimistic about keeping LST 325 in the River City after Peoria City leaders finally laid their cards on the table.
Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke is still optimistic about keeping LST 325 in the River City after Peoria City leaders finally laid their cards on the table.

Peoria's City Council approved $500,000 to bring the LST to Illinois.
That number is well short of the $1.6 million it will cost to move the LST.

The council also offered a five year contract which is half the length of the contract that will soon end with Evansville.

Orginally, Peoria discussed housing the ship on its downtown riverfront, but the new plan is to dock it near the Interstate 74 bridge.

Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke would not comment on Peoria's offer but says he is still confident in Evansville's chances.

Mayor Lloyd Winnecke says, "I feel, and this is just speaking from my gut, based on the hard work that we've put forward, based on the outpouring of support, I think the board will look positively on that, and I think that will have a huge impact whenever they vote."

An LST board member tells Eyewitness News that board members will not be publicly commenting on Peoria's offer.
But, that same board member tells us we should expect a vote earlier in July than first expected.
