Midwest Leaders Call on President to Help Relieve Propane Shortage

Governor Mike Pence joins other governors asking for federal help to increase propane supply through transportation.
Indiana Governor Mike Pence joined other governors from the Midwestern Governors Association in signing a letter to President Obama requesting assistance to address the current propane supply shortage across the Midwest, Tuesday.

“Hoosiers continue to face severe propane shortages and unprecedented winter weather, with no relief from either in sight,” said Governor Pence.

“In recent weeks, the State of Indiana has acted decisively to alleviate the impact of this crisis on the people of this state and now encourages the federal government to take every possible action to relieve the supply shortages and ensure families, farmers, and business owners can heat their homes, barns, and businesses.”

The letter calls on the entire Administration, including the U.S. Department of Energy and other relevant agencies to take steps to increase the propane supplies through any means of transportation.

Last week, Governor Pence extended an emergency proclamation to waive transport statutes until March 1, 2014.

Pence also declared an energy emergency and suspended limitations on divisible loads for propane carriers, and asked the Indiana Department of Transportation and the Indiana Department of Revenue to expedite permit applications and waive fees for overweight and over-sized loads for propane suppliers.

Nearly ten percent of Indiana residents use propane to heat their homes.

Hoosiers who are at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level and are interested in the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) can call 1-800-872-0371.
