Morning at the Museum: Owensboro Museum to Celebrate Summer With Exhibits, Program to Feed Hungry Kids

NOW SHOWING: Liberty on the Border Civil War Exhibit
Liberty on the Border Traveling Exhibit tells the story of border states during the American Civil War. The exhibit was created by the Cincinnati Museum Center in conjunction with The History Channel.

SUMMER FEEDING PROGRAM: TUESDAY – FRIDAY @ 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Any child that is 18 years or younger may eat a free, nutritious lunch regardless of where they live or attend school. Out of town guests are welcome. All meals much be eaten on site. The Owensboro Museum of Science and History is proud to serve as a feeding site for the Owensboro Public Schools’ Summer Feeding Program.

The Ruby Throated Hummingbird....Things That Make You Go "Hummmm"
What is it about hummingbirds that make them so fascinating? Is it their size? Their behavior? More fun facts about hummingbirds will be presented by the Daviess County Audubon Society during “Things that Make You Go 'Humm …' ” Along with the audience participation presentation, students will assemble hummingbird feeder kits to take home!

Calling all Kids! Solve the Civil War Morse Code Mystery Message!
Love a mystery? Try your hand at unscrambling a mystery message using Civil War era MORSE CODE! Members of the Owensboro Amateur Radio Club will be on hand to explain Morse Code and help you decipher some secrets! Included in the price of admission. Museum Members are free!

Make a take home Civil War Silhouette with Studio Slant! Included in the price of admission. Museum members are free.

Coin Collecting for Kids
Join Kevin L. Bruner as he entertains kids with the excitement of coin collecting. Kevin will unlock "hidden" secrets right on a coin in plain sight. He will use the Lincoln Cent as his inspiration. Then, we'll take a peek into a money purse from the Civil War era. What will we find? Will it be something familiar or completely strange and unusual? After visiting the Civil War, we'll journey deep into a coal mine in Kentucky and discover how miners were paid with scrip and learn the true meaning to, "I owe my soul to the company store." Kids of all ages are welcome to attend.

Tracing Your Civil War Ancestors. Leslie McCarty from the Daviess County Public Library Kentucky Room will make presentations on tracing your Civil War ancestors, followed by a Q&A sessions and individual tips and instructions.

Origins Cave Tour
Join Science Educator Kim Ray and have fun learning about cave formations such as stalactites and stalagmites. See flowstones, soda straw formations and many other interesting pieces of cave speleothems. THE CAVE TOUR IS INCLUDED IN ADMISSION, BUT PATRONS MUST SIGN UP AT THE RECEPTIONIST'S DESK, AS SPACE IS LIMITED FOR THIS GUIDED TOUR.
Time: 12:30 p.m. - 12:45 p.m.
The Summer of 1864 – The Civil War in Daviess County: Regional historian and author Glenn Hodges will discuss the effects of the Civil War in Daviess County in the summer of 1864. Martial law had been declared, gunboats were docked at Owensboro’s downtown Ohio River wharf and the Union was establishing local recruiting stations for runaway slaves. We’ll explore the Civil War as seen through the eyes of opposing Owensboro newspaper editors of the day. A question and answer period will follow the presentation. Time: 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m
