Smith was a missionary in Ukraine more than a decade ago. He returned to continue his work and see old friends.
Tomorrow, he is traveling to Donetsk, a city that has been in the news.
"The travel is what unsettles us the most," said Smith, "because it's uncontrollable really because you can't control who is on the bus, what they might say, what there political views are. That'll be the hardest part."
Smith says road blocks have been set up to check travelers, but he doesn't expect any problems. He says people he's encountered on both political sides want peace.
He will be in the country until next week.
