Ferguson's Police Chief, Thomas Jackson, revealed the name during a news conference Friday morning.
He's been a police officer for 6 years.
Earlier in the day, the Police Chief said the officer is distraught over the shooting.
Chief Thomas Jackson, Ferguson, MO Police: "He's devastated by this. He's heartbroken. This is his community. You know, he never wanted any of this to happen. And he's certainly heartbroken by the continuous violence that's been going on. It's tough. It's hard."
Violence erupted in Ferguson last weekend after 18 year-old Michael Brown was shot to death last Saturday.
Police have said the shooting occurred during a struggle for the officer's gun.
Witnesses have said brown's arms were raised when he was shot multiple times.
