The nature society begins a big transformation with a groundbreaking ceremony.

With the help of Mayor Lloyd Winnecke controlling a front-end loader, Wessleman Nature Society breaks ground on a more than $1.5 million dollar improvement project.

Executive Director John Scott Foster says one of the biggest overhauls will take place with the entrance.

Foster says the while the nature center was recently upgraded, it was still in dire need of a make-over.

"It's almost a museum of what a nature center used to be, it was badly done taxidermy mounts gathering dust under glass. So, it didn't do much and it wasn't important, and what we're doing is important. "

The more than a million dollars needed for the project came completely from donations, no tax payer dollars.

There is also hope for an added walkway over the Lloyd to connect with the state hospital grounds and eventually the Robert's Park Greenway.
