An Evansville restaurant owner is recovering this afternoon, after his business caught fire this morning.
Keith Waller owns Gator's Hot Fish House at 1203 North Main.
He was in his apartment upstairs above the business when he first heard a crackling sound.
When he realized there was a fire downstairs, he was trapped.
Keith "Gator" Waller, said, "the smoke got so bad that I really couldn't breath. I poked my head out the window right here and I realized that I can't jump that far, and then I thought, well I'll go to the front room here and I'll get out the front porch to get away from it, at least I won't die in there."
Waller says the dining room was gutted. He does have insurance and plans to remodel and reopen.
The investigation into what caused the fire is ongoing.
