Scott Elementary School teacher Kimber Scarlett received the Peabody Energy's Leader in Education Award today. The 5th grade teacher was surprised with the award and a $1,000 check during an assembly this morning.

The award honors local educators for inspiring and motivating youth to succeed. Recipients are selected throughout the school year by a committee of top educators and business leaders.

"Our boys and girls," said Scarlett, "everyday they come in and they're smiling and they give you hugs. So, we get a lot of that recognition just from their attitude when they come to school in the morning from their parents. But to have that outside source coming in, that means a lot."

Each Leader in Education will be honored at an awards gala after this school year. One will be named educator of the year and be awarded $5,000.
