Public Weighs in on Midwest Fertilizer Air Quality Permit

Local officials and the public weigh in on the proposed fertilizer plant for Posey County tonight.
Local officials and the public weigh in on the proposed fertilizer plant for Posey County tonight.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management held an information meeting and public hearing at Mt. Vernon High School. It focused on Midwest Fertilizer's Air Quality Permit proposal.

If approved, it would give the company the green light to build a nitrogen fertilizer manufacturing plant outside Mt. Vernon.

Supporters say the plant would bring hundreds of jobs to the area.

"I realize you have to balance things," said IBEW Business Manager Paul Green. "You have to balance the environment with jobs, but emissions are regulated. So, we feel like as bad as things have been over the last few years that this is very important to workers here in southwest Indiana."

Environmentalist John Blair also attended tonight's meeting voicing concerns over the possible effects the plant could have on the environment.

State officials have not set a timetable on when they will decide on the plant's air quality permit.

IDEM will accept written comments until March 3. The public can mail comments to the following address:
