Railroad Construction Impacting West Side Businesses

Employees say 'road closed,' does not mean business is closed.

"When it says 'road closed' half way up the street, no one is going to want to come down here." Employees say road closed, does not mean business is closed. DC Mobile and Electronic employee, Alex Morris, says this week's construction on three west side railroad crossings is starting to impact business. "It's kind of defeating the foot traffic for our business," says Morris.

CSX officials said construction would be finished by today, but that's not the case. Maryland, Ohio, and Franklin streets remain closed. "When I'm trying to get to work, or trying to make a delivery, I have to drive in one big circle," says Morris.

The repair work shuts down traffic on the road, and in the store. "We will have comments and calls, like hey, how do you get back there. Well, you have to take Wabash, or come down the Lloyd and take St. Joe." The store is excited for the end result, but hope the repairs end soon. "It just needs to get done."

The construction is starting to strike out at Franklin Lanes also. "It definitely needed to be done." Bowling Alley employee, Joyce Cummings, says the crossing needed to be fixed but it's becoming a headache. "It does make it hard for them to get around, because we have people from places like Newburgh and Boonville." She says their regular, league bowlers, can navigate around the work, but worries about the rest of the public. "League bowlers are going to get here. Open bowling, they might think it's not worth it and turn around to go elsewhere," says Cummings

The road may be closed, but businesses on Franklin street are open. "We are open, and we are always open, so just come on in."
