Those who are nominated as heroes do not know they are nominated until they arrive. There are 10 different award categories.

This year's winner for the youth good samaritan award, 12-year-old Laine Kennedy was recognized for her weekly visits to the Vanderburgh Humane Society, the formation of the Little Critter Club, and raising money to buy stuffed animals for children's homes that were burnt down. Kennedy made it her goal to touch the lives of as many people as she could.

"It means a second chance for people," said Kennedy, "who are separated from their family or they're hurt or something really bad has happened in their life. It's like giving them hope again."

Doctors, law enforcement, and children can be nominated as a hero. If you want to nominate someone for next years event, you can call the Red Cross at 812-471-7200.
