Coats says he hears a lot of questions about why the U.S. should care what is happening in Ukraine.
His answer is many larger wars have started with seemingly small incidents. That includes World War I, and more recently when Serbia shelled Croatia in 1992.
"So, if the international community had had the collective leadership, wisdom, and quite frankly the courage or guts to simply tell Bellgrade that bombing of civilain population centers are no longer shelled in modern Europe," said Coats, "all that suffering could have been prevented, and our own armed forces could have stayed in their barracks and in their homes."
Coats is calling for a series of economic and diplomatic sanctions including kicking Russia out of the G8 and asking FIFA to reconsider holding the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
