Sinkhole on Sycamore St. in Downtown Evansville

Road crews work on trying to repair a sinkhole that opened up in Evansville

It has been an ongoing process today in downtown Evansville as workers try to fix a sink hole. Road crews have even had to make the hole larger than what it was when it first opened. Workers are having to work inside the sinkhole and are facing challenges and figuring out what caused the hole and how to repair it.

Allen Mounts, who is the Director of Utilities, says the crews have been here trying to figure out what's causing the collapse. He says they have a couple ideas what may have caused the sinkhole, such as a backed up sewer line or last weeks heavy rains.

Another challenge facing the workers is the location of the sinkhole. Mounts says that workers are having to work in an area where there is a lot of gas lines, electric lines, and cable lines. The power line in the sink hole carrying 12,000 volts of electricity, forcing workers to have to dig by hand with shovels, instead of using a backhoe.

As of now, the work isn't costing the city any extra money. Mounts says that all the costs are internal costs, such as labor, the costs of using trucks, and the cost of using televised equipment. As of now, the sink hole isn't deep enough where the city has to call in outside contractors for assistance. Parts of the street are still open, and it is scheduled to completely  reopen Thursday afternoon. It is advised to avoid that area if possible for your safety and the safety of the workers.
