Its week two of our Upgrade campaign, where we offer healthier and simple changes to your everyday life. Many students and their families are hitting the roads for Spring Break, and while you'll make stops at dozens of gas stations, there are still ways to eat smart on your trips. Take a look as we stroll through a local gas station to find tasty and healthy options. Whether you're on a quick trip or a long journey, Dietician Angie Mullenix tells us there are better choices down these gas stations aisles that won't wreck your diet or your health. "It can be harder in a gas station, however if you take a look through the store usually you'll be able to find some things," Mullenix shares. Some popular choices on road trips to reconsider...energy drinks. "Alot of times people do go for the caffeinated drinks to keep the caffeine and keep them awake but really if you can stay well-hydrated that will help even more." Mullenix also suggests instead of the stocking up on M&Ms, Snickers and chips, go for fruit or lighter food bars. "Alot of times you can find peanut butter, you can have apples with peanut butter on them, there are different protein bars, look for one that has a little less sugar in it." Mullinex isn't saying completely ignore your sweet tooth, just satisfy it in moderation. "If you pack your snacks, you're probably going to have better choices, if you can pack things in a cooler or take things along...your snacks should be around 1 to 200 calories, look for drinks that don't have calories in them, and look for some things that may have some fiber or a little more protein in them that will stay with you a little bit longer." With a few easy hints you're ready for your trip, and even at gas stations there's ways to stay healthy and upgrade to a better you.
