Going back to school Monday will be a little easier for some Evansville students thanks to Unity Fest.
Going back to school Monday will be a little easier for some Evansville students thanks to Unity Fest. The back to school supply giveaway was held tonight at C.K. Newsome Community Center.

Students in need of assistance entering kindergarten through 8th grade walked away with a free backpack stuffed with school supplies. Organizers say they gave away 2,000 backpacks.

The event is an alliance of the Evansville Minister's Wives Council, Coalition of Inner-City Neighborhoods, Hola, EVSC, Walgreen's, and Kenny Kent Chevrolet.

"I have been buying school supplies for four days now," said Lois Duncan of Evansville Minister's Wives Council. "And just to see those young people come through, and they're so excited. What they do is, soon as they get out the door, they go and look in the packs, and you just see the smile on their face. That's my reward right there."

This is the fifth year for the giveaway.
