University of Southern Indiana is named "top of the heap" in a local recycling competition.

The university was given a trophy and a $1,500 check for defeating both the University of Evansville and Ivy Tech Community College in this years "Recyclemania."

In just eight weeks, USI students and staff collected the most paper, cardboard, bottles, and cans. But despite the big success, student supervisor Katie Greenwell says there's still plenty of recycling left to do.

"Our goal is to eliminate 50 percent of the landfill waste between 2014 and 2015," said Greenwell, "and to make things more student accessible, student friendly, faculty friendly. So, to make things as simple and easy as possible for everybody."

USI students and staff not only finished first in the Tri-State, but they also finished better than any other participating school in the state of Indiana. Nationally, USI finished 13th.
