USI Wins Second D-II CWS Title in Five Years

The Screaming Eagles win the 2014 D-II CWS.
The USI Screaming Eagles are National Champions, once again. Matt Chavarria took home MVP honors for the tournament thanks in part to a heroic effort in the title game. USI got down early after a pair of errors in the bottom of the fourth inning allowed Colorado Mesa to take a 2-1 lead. But Mesa would falter down the stretch.  Chavarria would add a sacrifice bunt in the eighth inning during which the ball got away from the Mesa third baseman, allowing the tying run to cross the plate putting the score at 2-2.

The score remained the same until the top of the twelfth inning, when the Mesa pitcher walked Andrew Cope with the bases loaded to score Matt Bowles. Chavarria closed the door in the bottom of the inning to close things out for the Eagles.  USI brings the national championship trophy back to Evansville with a final score of 3-2.
