A day after a heated meeting at South Spencer High School, the developer of a proposed turkey farm is defending his project.

Joseph Parker, president and manager of J.T. Parker Farms, wants to build a facility capable of housing more than 56,000 turkeys near the intersection of County Road 850 west and Base Road in Spencer County.

About fifty people attended the meeting Wednesday evening put on by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.

Residents voiced many concerns including the potential smell and pollution. However, Parker said he’s been touring turkey farms looking at the most advanced technology that reduces both.

Parker said he welcomes calls if anyone has questions about the farm. He said he has hired a soil engineer to assess the property.

Neighbors have 10 days to talk about concerns. IDEM has 90 days to make a decision on the permit.
