Edwards Co. Volleyball Team Welcomed Home from State

They might still be waiting for their first state title, but the Edwards County High School girls volleyball team still receives a hero's welcome.
They might still be waiting for their first state title, but the Edwards County High School girls volleyball team still receives a hero's welcome.

Saturday night in Albion, the Lady Lions came home from the state championship. The team fell short of its goal of a state championship and perfect season. They lost in the state championship game Saturday afternoon.

Their final record was an impressive 41-1, and there were plenty of smiles to go around.

"It was an absolute dream to play on this team," said Senior Riley Messman, "and to have had a record like that and to go out like this even though we lost. "

"I knew it was my last game," said Coach Linda Oxby, "I don't think it's hit me yet. I think next Fall when the season comes around and I'm not here, I think that's when it's going to hit me."

Legendary Coach Oxby is retiring because of her battle with breast cancer. She says there is no doubt that the winning tradition will continue at Edwards County, even if she has to pass on the clipboard.
