The department has six Humvees that it received at no cost from Army Surplus. The vehicles are heavy duty and feature four-wheel drive.
EPD has mobilized these units in the past, like during the flash flooding back in June.
"They do have some limitations but they are an asset to us," said Sgt. Jason Cullum. "They can do things and go places in some of these conditions that our patrol cars can't."
Sgt. Cullum says the Humvees also allow the department to drive on the secondary roads that haven't been plowed yet. Police warn people to try to stay home if possible.
