Police were called Tuesday afternoon to a battery complaint at an apartment on Hazelwood Square, which is on the southeast side. Officers learned a pregnant woman inside had been beaten up, while two people were watching including a small child.
They said the man, 23-year-old Tydell McNeal, had run off. An officer spotted him in the complex and started chasing him. He says McNeal pointed a gun at him but did not fire. The officer caught up with him and had to use a taser to subdue and arrest him.
Evansville police say the officer would have been justified if he had fired at McNeal, but the officer chose not to because it's such a populated area.
"When we're trained," said Sgt. Jason Cullum, "we're taught we're responsible for the backdrop. And if the bullet misses the target and continues on, you're responsible for what happens."
Police say the gun McNeal had was reported stolen earlier this year. He now faces numerous charges.
