EVSC School Board Huddles In Closed Door Meeting

The EVSC school board is now one step closer to filling a soon-to-be empty seat on the board. The school board met behind closed doors for two hours Monday evening to consider a replacement for school board president Sally Becker. Last week Becker announced she was stepping down from her position to move closer to family -- leaving her seat open for the remainder of her term.

The school board has since then received 16 applications for Becker's position. Monday board members narrowed the candidates down from 16 to 6 behind closed doors -- a process that has some taxpayers raising their brows.

"This is the process that was designed by law and we followed it," said board member Mike Duckworth. "We want to do what's best to have seven qualified people making these decisions."

The six candidates left standing are: Bill Asbury, Bix Branson, Douglas Chinn, Andrew Guarino, Michael Madriaga, and Elixica McAlister. They will be interviewed during a public meeting Monday, December 2. Whoever is chosen will serve on the school board through December 2014.
