She's a major pop icon and household name. Katy Perry tours world wide, but so do her parents. Perry's parents make their way to the Tristate as a part of their own kind of tour. Just as Perry hits the stage with her music, her parents hit the stage spreading the gospel. They have been touring for over thirty years, and this weekend they make their way to Abundant Life Community Church in Newburgh.
Her hits are chart toppers, she floods stadiums worldwide, she's famous for quirky outfits, and infamous for her public personal life, but to family, Katy Perry, will always be, Katy Hudson. "The thing about Katy is, she hasn't allowed Hollywood to get to her," says Mary and Keith Hudson.
While Perry tours the world with her music, her parents Keith and Mary Hudson, tour the world too. They are preaching the gospel from Mexico to Switzerland. This weekend the two make their way to the Tristate. "He said yes, we would love to have you come out here. It would be exciting. It's almost like the circus is coming to town."
They are preaching youth and church services at Abundant Life Community Church in Newburgh. "He and his wife are the parents of the most popular singer in the world night now, and I don't know how to embrace that . To wrap your mind around, hey our daughter is pretty much know world-wide," says Pastor Mark Short.
Just like the daughter hits the stage, so do the parents, to what else, but Katy's newest single 'Roar.' They embrace their daughter's fame to help reach youth.
Though Katy's stage performance is more risqué, being in front of a crowd with a mic seems to come naturally to this family. "We were preaching the gospel many, many, years before she ever came out of the womb and it just is what it is." The family says despite the scrutiny, they all remain grounded. "We all level her off at Christmas and Thanksgiving. We say remember who you really are Katy." The two say behind Katy's Hollywood glam, lies a good heart. "She's a very kind, generous person, she really loves people, she cares about people, and she's a real giver," her parents say. It's been a busy weekend for the Hudson's who just helped Katy celebrate her 29th birthday. Tomorrow they will preach three more services at Abundant Life Community Church.
