Gastric sleeve surgery, also known as sleeve gastrectomy, is a restrictive weight loss surgery performed by removing a portion of the stomach reducing the stomach to about 25% of its original size. This creates food volume restriction to effectively feel satisfied on less calories. The larger curve of the stomach is sectioned off and removed leaving a sleeve or banana shape from the esophagus to the intestines. The surgery permanently reduces the size of the stomach and is not reversible.
