Local Man Wins National Award for Work at Literacy Center

Darrell Murray, who was awarded the Dollar General Student of the Year Award by ProLiteracy and the partners of the U.S. Conference on Adult Literacy. Murray has been a student of The Literacy Center since July 2009.
The Literacy Center staff traveled to Washington D.C. for the United States Conference on Adult Literacy (USCAL) with their student, Darrell Murray, who was awarded the Dollar General Student of the Year Award by ProLiteracy and the partners of the U.S. Conference on Adult Literacy. Murray has been a student of The Literacy Center since July 2009. Murray has been paired with his volunteer tutor, Annette Lavallo, since April of 2011. He has accomplished many of his mini goals and now reads for enjoyment. The award was given on November 1, 2013.

USCAL in Washington, D.C.: The 2013 U.S. Conference on Adult Literacy brings together attendees from across the nation through 31 organizations that are working to make change in the adult literacy field through professional development, advocacy, and adult learner leadership.

The Literacy Center is a nonprofit educational program dedicated to helping adults of all ages improve their lives and their communities by learning reading, writing, and problem-solving skills.
