The Evansville Police Department said Thursday a man involved in several crimes throughout Vanderburgh County the past week is a suspect in a murder investigation.
Sgt. Jason Cullum said John Vernon Jackson Jr.'s crime spree began last week at the Marathon gas station on Weinbach Ave. He's accused of robbing a gas station attendant at knife point.
On Christmas Eve, EPD found Nicholas Matthew dead in his apartment in the 1000 block of Hatfield Drive near Washington and Vann Ave. He had apparently been stabbed multiple times.
Later on Christmas Eve, the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office said a female cab driver and a passenger were robbed and stabbed at Pleasant Ridge trailer park.
Authorities arrested Jackson and Lewis Yates at the scene. After Jackson's arrest, authorities found credit cards in the cab connecting Jackson to the crime scene of Hatfield Drive.
Detectives said Jackson admitted to both the cab driver stabbing and the gas station robbery. He also admitted to robbing Matthew, but denies knowing anything about his death.
Jackson is in custody for the robbing and stabbing of the cab driver. No charges have been filed in the murder investigation, but police said they will be filed soon.
Cullum said Matthew and Jackson were acquaintances. He said there are no other suspects at this time.
