Man Dies Following Shootout With Off-Duty Hancock Co. Deputy

Kentucky State Police report the man injured in today's deputy-involved shooting is now dead. KSP is now investigating the death of 43-year-old Harold Powers of Lewisport.
Update (10:46 p.m.): A man is killed in a shootout with an off-duty Hopkins County deputy. Kentucky State Police troopers believe Harold Powers, 43, of Lewisport came to the Deputy Kenneth Eubanks house with the intent to kill him.

The incident happened shortly after 12:30 p.m. in the 1700 block of KY 2181. Investigators say Eubanks saw Powers get out of his car with a gun moments before confronting the man on his porch.

Investigators say Powers shot at the deputy with an unknown caliber pistol. Troopers say Eubanks then returned fire in self-defense, shooting powers in the chest. Powers was airlifted to the hospital where he later died.

"Detectives will be investigating this a little further to find out was there a history between the two, was it work related, how it all came about. We don't have that information right now but I venture to say in days to come we will," said Trooper Corey King.

Nearby residents revere Eubanks as a friendly man and good neighbor. Frances Storm, who lives in the area, says neighbors are a little shaken by the incident.

"Oh it scares ya. This is a quiet neighborhood ya know, and they're all good neighbors. It was scary, that's for sure," said Storm. "I'm sorry this ever happend. That's bad, you know, to have to shoot someone."

Eubanks was not hurt during the incident and is expected to be OK.
