After weeks of answering questions and hearing debates over the proposed convention hotel, it's Evansville Mayor, Lloyd Winnecke's, turn to talk. He turns to, where else, but his very own YouTube channel. It's a way to inform the public about any topics regarding the city that he hopes to address.
In today's video, Mayor Winnecke reiterates several factors surrounding the convention hotel like the estimated cost, size, and economic potential. Also in this video he discusses a study from the fifties, as a way to remind Evansville of it's potential. "Now is the time to seize the opportunity before us," says Mayor Winnecke. It's another installment in a series of videos from Winnecke's YouTube channel. Many of his most recent videos are about the proposed downtown convention hotel. "Whatever it takes to get your message out. Use whatever works," says At large City Council member, Jonathan Weaver. Weaver is an avid supporter of the hotel project, and believes the mayor turning to social media is refreshing. "We can watch and then we can voice whatever our opinion is afterwards. Like I said, it's free, and you have the choice of whether or not you want to watch it. That's the beauty of it," adds Weaver. While the mayor may turn to the present to get his point across, he's looking to the past to help prove that point. Winnecke recently found a study from the 1950's. In that study, city leaders looked into the challenges Evansville was facing at the time. Ironically, some could say it's like that study was done yesterday. "Most notable, was the finding that, and I quote, Evansville is racked by pessimism, gloom, inability to work in a unified fashion, one group stymies another simply because of personal differences between members, the city as a whole is unable to accomplish anything," says Winnecke. "When they built Robert's Stadium in the fifties, I think there was some sort of push back then. Then look how beloved it became. There was an out cry when the Ford Center was being built. It just takes some time for change to happen, for things to be accepted in the community, and people realized that was the best thing to do," says Weaver. By using the past and present, Mayor Winnecke urges the city to seize today's opportunity, so we won't regret it tomorrow.
We reached out to several City Council members regarding the mayor's latest video. Earlier this week, officials decided to delay the vote on financing a hotel, so Council Members could review a financial analysis of the developer HCW.
