Mechanics Reminding Drivers to Prepare their Cars for Cold Weather

The freezing temperatures can take a toll on your car in unexpected ways.
The freezing temperatures can take a toll on your car in unexpected ways.

Mechanics at Purcell Tire & Rubber in Henderson say they're seeing more people call them asking for last minute check ups, making sure their vehicle has enough fluids or getting oil change.

One of the most important things drivers should focus on is windshield wipers. Ed Whelan of Purcell says its important to make sure they're working right and that motorists are using them right. He adds worn out wipers can leave streaks on front windows and obstruct your view.

"A lot of people use their wiper blades for an ice scraper," said Whelan. "and that might work. But when you need them to clear the water off, they're not going to work that well."

Two other important things you should check on are the car battery and windshield wiper fluid. Whelan says if you're able to, try to park the car away from the wind as much as possible.

Another thing to watch for are your tires. Mechanics say your tire can lose pressure when temperatures get as low they're forecasted to early next week.
