The proposed IU Medical School expansion project has been billed as a project that could transform the community and economy. Even with it still in it's early stages, we're learning more about this project.
Dr. Steven Becker, Director and Associate Dean of the IU Medical School-Evansville campus, was the keynote speaker at Tuesday's Notary Club Meeting.
"We keep hearing about the new medical school," said Dr. Becker. "The medical school this, the medical school that. This is much larger than the medical school."
It's about the community and the economy, Dr. Becker said. The watchful eyes of those in the Rotary Club have a vested interest in both.
"We would create over 3000 jobs by the year 2030," said Dr. Becker. "It would have about a $580 million economic impact in the region."
Not only that, the proposed IU Medical School Expansion project would help cure a diagnosis Dr. Ray Nicholson could see coming.
"We have a great need for more physicians in this area," said Dr. Nicholson. "As Dr. Becker pointed out, physicians tend to stay where they are trained."
"The idea here is to bring all of us together so that we learn together," said Dr. Becker. "We train together. We hit the work force ready for the current challenges in medical care."
When it comes to a project of this size and scope, officials say it comes down to location, location, location. The question now is which one.
"The recommendation was that a downtown site is preferred," said Dr. Becker. "That was from the feasibility study. I will tell you that the steering committee actually favors an east side location."
Dr. Becker says a recent study of area physicians found they narrowly prefer an east side location over downtown as well.
