Wal-Mart reports it's laying off 2,300 employees in its Sam's Club division.

The company says nearly half the cuts will affect salaried assistant managers, the rest  will hit hourly employees. Wal-Mart says it's part of its attempt to make its workforce leaner.

Other retailers have been announcing layoffs after a disappointing holiday season. Macy's recently said it will cut 2,500 employees.

Sam's Club still plans to open 15 new stores this year.
