Work on Planned Mixed-Use Building May Not Start Until Next Year

The planned five-story building could house offices and up to three restaurants.
Construction on a building near Smothers Park may not start until next year.

Developers Jack Wells and Matt Hayden bought the El Toribio restaurant earlier this year. They plan to build a five-story building worth about $10 million. Up to three restaurants and offices are some things that could be placed at the site, although there are no official plans yet.

"That's really, ultimately, what we would like to see emerge in the coming years," says Joe Berry of the Greater Owensboro Economic Development Corporation. "So, this would be, hopefully, the start of a nice domino effect that developers see that there's an opportunity to do some cool projects."

Berry says the developers will officially take the site over on New Year's Day.
