EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – An Evansville motel remains open after a fire caused a large amount of damage to the structure.

Firefighters were called to One Life Motel in the 2500 block of Hwy 41 after a guest used an alarm system pull station to alert 911 of a fire.

Officials say the guest tried to put the fire out with a fire extinguisher but was unsuccessful.

Arriving firefighters saw smoke and fire coming from the south corner of the business. They had to cut open the roof for ventilation and to find hidden fire.

The fire was put out in about an hour.

While firefighters worked the scene, traffic from southbound Hwy 41 was detoured onto Old Business 41 near the the Pigeon Creek Bridge construction detour.

Utilities to the entire complex were turned off during the fire but were later restored to the unaffected areas.

Four people had to be relocated to another motel. One firefighter was treated for minor injuries.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
