US Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) says President Donald Trump deserves to have his cabinet nominees approved. This comes after the US Senate approved the nomination of Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education with a tie-breaking vote from Vice President Mike Pence.

Sen. McConnell made the following remarks on Betsy DeVos:

“I look forward to confirming her to this important position so that she can get to work on behalf of America’s students and schools. As I said yesterday, this well-qualified candidate has earned the support of several education groups and nearly two dozen governors from across the nation. She understands that teachers, students, parents, school boards, and state and local governments — not Washington bureaucrats — are best suited to make education decisions for our kids, and I know she’s committed to improving our education system so that every child has a brighter future.”

The day before the vote, Democrats held a 24-hour marathon of speeches in which lawmakers urged at least one Republican to vote against DeVos.

DeVos was opposed by teachers’ unions and all 48 Senate Democrats.

Sen. Susan Collins of Maine and Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska were the only two Republicans to vote against DeVos.
