EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT)–Ringing in the Christmas season is the annual 911 Gives Hope For the Holidays toy drive at the east side Walmart parking lot this weekend. Our media partners at Townsquare Radio, as well as law enforcement and firefighters, host the annual event. This is the 11th year for the drive. When the drive first formed it was to deliver toys to children in the hospital during Christmas. Now it’s so popular hospital staff says they have enough toys to give out to children all year long.
“If you have a kid going in for surgery or a kid that is really sick and is in the hospital for a week or so, every day they can go to the closet and find something to cheer them up and put a smile on their face and help a kid that’s crying. They come in and they are upset maybe that stuffed animal makes them forget about why they are there.” Evansville Police Chief Billy Bolin says.
Santa will also be there each day from noon until six for pictures. The drive ends at six Sunday evening.
