FULL TRANSCRIPTION:

Brandon Bartlett: Well, good afternoon Shelley. I want to tell you about a very special event that will be taking place later on tonight – the Queen and King contest. Always a very special event every year down here. I’m joined now by a fellow Brandon, Brandon McClish. He’s here to talk about this contest. He’s with the West Side Nut Club Fall Festival. Now, these are 8th graders that are taking part in this tonight. This starts when they’re in the 7th grade you told me?

Brandon McClish: Exactly. So, the process actually starts in about February or March. As chairman, I contact all the principals of all the local schools, and they have their own parameters on how they choose who the Queen and/or king will be. And from that, we start the process of getting ahold of their parents, doing the pictures now on display and going through the summer to make sure they have the proper attire and dress and things like that. But it is a 7-month thing, they start in 7th grade and now, they’re representing their 8th grade year in their schools.

Brandon Bartlett: And really, it’s just the Queens that will be judged tonight, is that right?

Brandon McClish: That is correct. Yes, the queens are judged on three different things; appearance, posture/poise, and personality. And some questions I threw in there, they should have a lot of fun. We really focus on the queens and the kings are just there for eye candy for the evening.

Brandon Bartlett: What do the winners get?

Brandon McClish: So, this is fresh out here. No one’s seen this, it’s fresh. This is the tiara that they’ll be winning, and this is the king pendant that we’ll be having. This is brought to you by McCarty’s – they’re our sponsor. This is fantastic and beautiful tiara here. We’ve been doing this for years and we’ve added this king pin for the men. So, everyone will get a trophy, then they get the large trophy for the winner’s and runner’s up.

Brandon Bartlett: And will the winners be in the parade?

Brandon McClish: They will be in the parade and we just did the float. So, they’ll be in the large acorn we just redid all summer long. That’ll be the show piece #24 coming down here on Saturday.

Brandon Bartlett: Now, this is a big event every year, people come down to the main stage and watch this.

Brandon McClish: Come down early because that main stage gets packed. Each school is represented by all of their friends and family and we hype it up. We want Helfrich Park to get loud, we want St. Phillips to get loud, it is a great, great event. It’s the show piece of the festival.

Brandon Bartlett: Now, this is taking place tonight at 8:15 right after Amateur Hour.

Brandon McClish: Absolutely, so we start right at 8:15 to introduce all the king/queen contestants – west river will be the judges – we were supposed to have last year’s queen here, but she’s actually a freshman at Mater Dei and she has soccer this evening so, good luck wild cats and soccer. It should be a great event.

Brandon Bartlett: Again, that is 8:15 on the main stage if you’d like to come down and watch that. We’ll have a lot more from Fall Fest coming up a little later.
