Local

(WEHT/AP)-The U.S. Navy is naming a new aircraft carrier after decorated World War II veteran Doris “Dorie” Miller.

This is the first aircraft to be named after an African American. It is also the first to be named after a sailor for actions while serving in the enlisted ranks.

Miller defended Pearl Harbor during the 1941 attack on the Hawaiian naval base. The Navy said Miller manned an anti-aircraft machine an African American was not allowed to man a gun in the Navy. He was never trained to operate onboard the USS West Virginia.

Miller died while serving on a ship that was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in November 1943.
