Art Van Furniture going out of business; Evansville location staying open

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Art Van Furniture, the Michigan-based chain known for rambunctious advertisements promising low prices, is going out of business.

The company announced the decision to close Thursday. It said it would start liquidation sales Friday at all its Art Van Furniture, Art Van PureSleep and Scott Shuptrine Interiors stores in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Ohio.

“Despite our best efforts to remain open, the Company’s brands and operating performance have been hit hard by a challenging retail environment,” Art Van spokesperson Diane Charles explained in a statement.

However, we’re told the Evansville location will be staying open.

The general manager of the Evansville location says the store is a franchise, and not owned by the Art Van Furniture owner.

We are told the Evansville location will continue to purchase furniture from Art Van for a brief period of time. After than time, it will be up to the franchisees to negotiate with the manufacturers to continue to get furniture to sell.
