Attorneys, representing an Evansville man charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of his father, are filing a motion to have a mental evaluation.

The attorneys want to see if Mark Hillyer is competent to stand trial for the charges against him.

Hillyer is being held without bond.

Evansville Police say Hillyer stabbed his 78-year-old father Craig Hillyer in the chest on June 6.

Craig Hillyer later died at the hospital.

Mark Hillyer’s attorneys will pursue a defense of not guilty as a result of a mental disease.

Our media partner, the Evansville Courier & Press, previously reported Mark Hillyer was turned away from receiving emergency health care on the same day as the alleged stabbing.

He is due back in court in mid July.
