Construction work will close the campground at John James Audubon State Park during 2018.

According to Kentucky State Park officials, the dam that created Scenic Lake must be reinforced and the campground will be used as a staging area for construction equipment.

The work, overseen by the state Division of Water, will happen this spring on Scenic Lake Dam to bring it into compliance with the Commonwealth’s requirements for high hazard dams and to provide safety for areas in Henderson that lie downstream from the dam.

The estimated cost is $2 million.

Work includes making the dam stronger and construction of a new spillway.

Guests with camping reservations will receive refunds. Other Kentucky State Park campgrounds, including Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park, Lake Malone State Park and Nolin Lake State Park, have campgrounds that open March 15.

Camping reservations can be made by visiting www.parks.ky.gov
