Beto O’Rourke drops out of 2020 presidential campaign

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (CNN) – Beto O’Rourke has dropped out of the 2020 presidential race.

The news first broke via his verified Twitter account. And comes hours before a major donor dinner in Iowa.

In a statement, the former Texas Congressman said, “though it is difficult to accept, it is clear to me now that this campaign does not have the means to move forward successfully.”

O’Rourke went on to say he will work to ensure that the Democratic nominee is successful in defeating Donald Trump in 2020.

Adding, “I can tell you firsthand from having the chance to know the candidates, we will be well served by any one of them, and I’m going to be proud to support whoever that nominee is.”

O’Rourke says he will not run for the open Senate seat in Texas.

His exit leaves 17 Democratic candidates in the 2020 presidential race.
