On February 11, the Evansville Police Department say 33-year-old Daniel Sears shot and killed 31-year-old Maygen Sears and 41-year-old Richard Popp. Daniel Sears then drove to the 4H Center, and police say he turned the gun on himself.
Maygen and Daniel Sears were in the process of a divorce. On January 11, Maygen filed a police report alleging intimidation by Daniel, according to EPD. Over the next few weeks, police say there were three reports of Daniel violating his restraining order. However, there was nothing in the order that prohibited Daniel from using a firearm.
On the day of the shooting, EPD says it received a report of Daniel’s behavior the night before, and officers were trying to locate him.
Brad Byrd spoke with Maygen Sears’s father, Paul Fitzpatrick, about the pain of his daughter’s death and why he wants the legal system to change.
