Candidates face off in third gubernatorial debate

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WEHT) – Republican Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin and democratic candidate Andy Beshear faced off Saturday in Louisville for their third debate.

The debate was hosted by WLKY and the League of Women Voters.

The candidates talked about a number of topics, including tax reform, the child welfare system and education.

Both were asked about what specific plans they have to address the opioid epidemic.

“Last year, we saw the national average drop five percent. In Kentucky, we led the nation with a fifteen percent decline in opioid deaths. And the reason being is because of the dollars we’ve put in. We’ve put in over forty million dollars and we recently won a grant for ninety million dollars to help us address this scourge in our state,” said Bevin.

“I’ve also been the most aggressive AG in the country at suing opioid manufacturers and distributors. The numbers don’t lie. I’ve sued more of them than anyone else in this country and we have won every motion and every argument in them. But this governor stood in my way nearly every step,” said Beshear.
