China (CNN) This gives new meaning to the phrase “dirty money.”

Chinese officials are literally cleaning cash in an attempt to combat the Coronavirus. The state-run tabloid global times says  the Guangzhou branch might be destroying money.

The disease has already infected more than 71,000 people across the world. Nearly 1,800 people have died from Coronavirus. Most of the victims are Chinese.

According to the World Health Organization, the virus can survive on surfaces for hours.
Numerous studies have shown that money can be filthy.

A 2017 study from New York says dollar bills have contained bacteria, viruses and DNA  from pets.
