Alleged shooter says he felt threatened by teen

Crime

ROCKPORT, Ind. (WEHT)- The investigation continues after a South Spencer High School teen is shot and killed Wednesday night.

Authorities say Zane Lee, 18, was shot at an apartment complex near 8th and Seminary Street.

Joesph Petry, 19, is charged with murder in Lee’s death..

According to an affidavit, Petry told officers he felt threatened Wednesday night because his ex-girlfriend said she would have him “jumped” for hanging out with another woman. For this reason, Petry said he had a loaded gun on him.

Petry said his ex-girlfriend showed up that evening and became physically abusive. According to the affidavit, Petry then says Lee and another woman came running over and began hitting him.

This is when Petry says he fired warning shots into the air, but says Lee continued to be aggressive. Petry says he then shot Lee, even though he says he didn’t want to.

In the same affidavit, one witness said Petry was being violent toward his girlfriend and Lee was trying to get him off of her. The witness says that’s when Petry fired shots into the air and then shot Lee.

Lee’s family is in the process of arranging a funeral service and is asking for support with a go fund me account.
