EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – Online shoppers will be taking advantage of special deals during Amazon Prime Day. And Evansville Police are offering some safety tips on how to keep your packages from being taken.

Police say package thieves don’t just operate during the holidays.

First, track your packages and follow shipments from the seller to your front door with online, text message or phone call tracking.

Second, be available for delivery, or ask a trusted friend or neighbor to pick up the packages in a timely manner after delivery. Or you can have your package delivered to your workplace.

Third, request a signature, which might come with a fee, but without a recipient’s signature, the delivery service won’t be able to leave a package on a doorstep.

Fourth, schedule a certain day and/or time for your package to be delivered, including evenings and weekends or provide specific instructions on where the package should be placed. Fees for personalization vary by delivery service.

Fifth, use your credit card. A credit card company is more likely to offer refunds in the event of a theft.

Lastly, insure valuable items to protect against loss or damage.
