EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – A pursuit Monday morning ended in a crash following a police chase through a portion of Evansville.
“I need a car just south of Fares at Delaware…he’s going north he’s going north- going to 41 guys,” officers were heard saying over police scanner traffic.
The incident started early Monday in Owensboro when a man allegedly snuck into Icey Johnson’s house on West 4th Street and took the keys to her Chrysler 300.
Johnson says she recognized the suspect on her surveillance camera when she woke up.
“I’ve been looking around Owensboro – Henderson – through Evansville – the police didn’t find my car, I found my car,” said Johnson.
Johnson says she saw the suspect post pictures on social media, so she got a ride to Evansville and found her car and called police.
EPD caught up with the car near Highway 41 and Virginia and started chasing it.
“Hey he’s right behind me he’s coming right to you at Columbia, we got him here – boxed in here at 41 and Columbia,” officers said over the scanner.
The owner of the stolen car says four people were inside – one passenger took off running and two of the suspects were taken into custody.
The driver was taken to the hospital and Johnson says she is still shaken from the incident.
“I’m very upset that people would come inside someone’s house and steal something from somebody, to do this to somebody is very wrong. you can get killed like that. It’s very disrespectful,” Johnson said.
The driver of the stolen car, 20-year-old Shontez Campbell, was charged with auto theft and resisting law enforcement.
EPD Public Information Officer Sgt. Nick Winsett said a separate subject, 19-year-old Timothy Lewis, fled from the vehicle and was arrested.
